Albert "Doug" Winquist, Jr., age 88, of West Bend, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospital in the Town of Polk.
He was born on April 9, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY to the late Albert and Martha (nee Carlson) Winquist, Sr. Doug was a member of the Paid Boy's Choir at Grace Episcopal Church in New York City and was the Choir Boy of the Year. Doug attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), the University of Louisville, and Columbia and earned a Master's Degree in Chemistry. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. After the war, Doug moved to Connecticut where he met his future wife, Betsy Curtis at church. On June 26, 1954, they were united in marriage at First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich, CT. Together they lived in Virginia and then West Virginia before moving to West Bend in 1976.
Doug was a chemist at the former Freeman Chemical Company in Saukville before retiring in 1991. He was member of the American Chemical Society for over 60 years. Doug was an active member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. He volunteered at the Riveredge Nature Center, was a Boy Scout Troup Leader and an American Red Cross driver.
Doug is survived by his wife, Betsy of West Bend; four children, Douglas (Katie) Winquist, III of Fredonia, Martha (David) Emrey of Greensboro, NC, Karen (Jon) Williamson, of Sparta, and Stuart (Irene) Winquist of East Hampton, CT; seven grandchildren, Matt (fiancAC.e, Liz Zakany) Winquist, Amanda Winquist, Marty Williamson, Wendy Williamson, Curtis Williamson, Tristan Winquist, and Emilia Winquist; his brother, Robert (Starr) Winquist of Florham Park, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Grellier of Sudbury, MA and Kay Curtis of Trumbull, CT; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers-in-law, Bill Grellier and Ed Curtis.
A memorial service in remembrance of Doug will be held on Sunday, April 7th at 3:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, 323 S. 5th Avenue with Rev. Jeremy Deaner officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Sunday from 2:00 pm until the time of service.
Memorials to the church's Music Fund, Pineview Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Little Kohler or Riveredge Nature Center are appreciated by the family.
