Alfred L. “Al” Braun, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Lomira, passed away on Sunday, June 2, 2013. He was 92 years young.
He was born on November 4, 1920, in St. Cloud, the son of the late Peter and Amalia (Beisbier) Braun. After graduating from Lomira High School in 1938, he enlisted in the military where he worked his way up in the ranks from PVT to Major at retirement. Following retirement, Al developed and operated Lost Lake Resort in Paradise, MI. He had many successful years there with family and friends, many who still stayed in touch.
Al became a licensed professional dog handler and opened Henty P’Kenya Kennel and was also President of the Basenji Dog Club of America.
After moving to Florida, Al became a very active service officer for the Disabled American Veterans, of which he was most proud, working out of the Ft. Walton Beach, Port Charlotte and the Jacksonville offices. He traveled all over the world, mostly to Germany, to trace his genealogy, which he spent a lot of time on, and still had many friends in many countries. His jokes and stories were enjoyed by all who heard them. Al will surely be missed by all who knew and loved him. He lived a full and wonderful life.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Doris; his son, Alfred (Jan) of Ohio; his stepsons, Thomas Beattie and Eric Burlingham; his stepdaughter, Lori Burlingham; five grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren and in Wisconsin his sister-in-law, Sally and her daughter, Barbara, many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him and his dear friends too numerous to mention, but he talked about all with great fondness.
He was predeceased by his late wife, Kathrine Mills Braun; his daughter, Susan Johnston; his stepdaughter, Elsa McLintock, four brothers and a sister.
A Memorial Mass for Al was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2013, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lomira with Father Dennis Budka officiating. Inurnment of his cremains, with military honor rites by members of the Bintzler-Waehler American Legion Post 347 Lomira, followed Mass in the parish cemetery.
The Braun family greeted relatives and friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Al’s memory are appreciated.
The Kietzer-Miller Funeral Home in Lomira was entrusted with Al’s arrangements.
