Alice M. Allen, nee Main, 85, of West Bend, was called home to be with the Lord, Friday January 30, 2015 at Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center, West Bend.
She was born October 5, 1929 in Evansville, Wisconsin, to the late Floyd and Mildred (nee Jones) Main.
After graduating from Evansville High School in 1947, Alice worked at the state capital in Madison Wisconsin for the state Superintendent of Schools and the governor's office. On February 26, 1949, she married the love of her life, Ace H. Allen, Jr. in Evansville Wisconsin. They made their home in La Crosse while Ace completed his college degree. In 1950, they moved to Fredric, Wisconsin and in 1953 settled in Janesville, Wisconsin. In 1958, Ace's job with West Bend Schools, brought them to West Bend. Ace passed away November 1, 1993.
Alice worked many years for the West Bend School District as a support staff in the foreign language department. She was also a member of the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school as well as served on various committees.
Alice was an avid bridge player, loved to read, knit, sew,decorate her home and travel. Gardening was also something that Alice enjoyed and her efforts earned her the Mayor's Beautification Award. She and Ace enjoyed many summers with family and friends at their cabin in Three Lakes, Wisconsin.
Above all, Alice will be remembered for her deep love of family, her passion for children, the importance of her faith, as well as her kindness and generosity.
Alice is survived by her two children, Jane (Mel) Esselman of West Bend and Jerry (Terri) of Stanley, Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Erin (Chris) Hansen of Spring, Texas, Michael Esselman of San Francisco, California, Rebecca (Matt) Woolam of Good Hope, Illinois, and Robert (Amber) Allen of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; four great-grandsons, Caden, Evan, Ethan, and Colin Hansen; nieces and nephews, Linda (Bob) Grueneberg of West Bend, Wisconsin, Nancy (Bob) Ernst of Neenah, Wisconsin and Betty Hanson of Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Ace; two sisters, Betty (Ronald) Brown and Helen (Robert) Coyne; and two brothers, Floyd Jr. "Cy" (Ruth) Main and Lauren (June) Main.
Funeral services in remembrance of Alice will be held on Monday, February 2, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, 323 S. 5th Ave, West Bend. Visitation will be at the church at 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will follow in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.
In lieu of flowers, memorials for Cedar Community or the Full Shelf Food Pantry are appreciated.
The family wishes to express special thanks to Dr. Robert Gibson and Mary Mueller, APNP for their professional and compassionate care. Our gratitude extends to the dedicated staff at Countryside as well as so very many others at Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center and Cedar Lake Home Health and Hospice, for their skill, kindness and loving care. Also, thank you to Diane Miller and Judy Krepsky, who enriched Alice's life in her final years beyond measure.
