Beryl Timmer, of Big Cedar Lake, West Bend, passed away last week at Cedar Community. She was born and raised in Milwaukee. Beryl and her late husband John owned and operated Timmer's Resort on Big Cedar Lake. She was a graduate of State Teachers College earning a BA Degree. Beryl later graduated from UWM with a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology. She was a guidance councilor at Silverbrook and Badger Middle Schools until her retirement. Beryl spent her winters in Pharr, Texas for twenty years. Timmer's Resort has been owned and operated by four generations of the Timmer family. Mathias and Margaret Timmer settled in a log cabin in 1864, and began farming. By 1882 they had built and opened the Timmer Hotel, serving guests from Milwaukee, Chicago and St. Louis. In 1907, son Leonard Timmer and his wife, Rose, began building cottages. By 1926, ten cottages were completed, including electricity and running lake water. In the 1940's John and Beryl Timmer leased the hotel. By the 1950's they bought the hotel and cottages from John's parents. During the summers they served three meals each day, seven days a week, to guests of the hotel. Winters, the restaurant and bar were open for private parties. Children, Jack and Barbara, were also part of the operation of Timmer's from a young age on. In 1981, the commitment to this heritage passed to the fourth generation, Jack Timmer. Jack operates the dining room and bar. Jack and his sister Barbara continue to operate the cottages together. Beryl is survived by children, Jack of Big Cedar Lake, and Barbara (Douglas) Jaeger of Beach Park, Illinois. Along with grandchildren, Jeffrey Jaeger of Chicago, Illinois, and Andrea Jaeger of Haslett, Michigan. Beryl was preceded in death by husbands John Timmer and Lloyd Buland. A visitation and celebration of Beryl's life, for family and friends, will be held on Wednesday August 18th from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM on the grounds of Timmer's Resort. In the interest of science, Beryl has donated her body to the Medical College of Wisconsin for research. In lieu of flowers donations in Beryl's memory may be made to the Timmer family memorial fund at the M&I Bank in West Bend. Myrhum - Patten Funeral & Cremation Service is assisting the family.
