Charles Andrew Schaefer "Chuck", 80, of Cedarburg, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012, surrounded by his wife and children at Horizon Hospice Inpatient Unit of St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital.
Charles was born in Nabob on August 7, 1931, the son of the late Leo and Ann (Kueckler) Schaefer. Later in life the family moved to Ashford and South Byron. On September 11, 1954, Charles married Marlene Backhaus at St. Michael's Catholic Church, St. Michaels, the daughter of the late George and Frances (Staehler) Backhaus, and stepfather, Theodore Schneider. The couple made their home in West Bend until moving to Cedarburg in July of 1962.
Charles retired from General Motors in Oak Creek on December 31, 1995, as a machine repair mechanic. He had been a member of St. Francis Borgia Church in Cedarburg since 1962. He was also a member of Cedarburg Fire Department, West Bend Moose Lodge 1398, Antique Tractor Club and Pork Producers Club of Washington, Ozaukee and Sheboygan County.
Charles enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, Green Bay Packers football, Milwaukee Brewers baseball and playing cards, especially sheepshead, at the Jackson Senior Citizens Center.
Charles will be deeply missed by his wife, Marlene, of 57 years; his children, Joan (Neil)
Swanson of Gilbert, Arizona, Julie (Steven) Boyea of Port Washington, Mark (Ellen) Schaefer of West Bend, Margaret (David) Becker of Fredonia, Jane (Robert) Falk and Janet (Daniel) Mueller both of West Bend; 11 grandchildren, Steven (Jennifer) Swanson of West Bend, Stephanie (Michael) (nee Swanson) Edgmon of Gilbert, Arizona, Kelly Boyea of Port Washington, Melissa Schaefer and Mark Schaefer both of West Bend, Jacqueline Becker (special friend, David Papenfuss) and Thomas Becker both of Fredonia, Brittany Falk and John Falk, Cindy Mueller and Jacob Mueller all of West Bend; a great-grandson, Cade Edgmon of Gilbert, Arizona; two brothers, Ervin (Sylvia) Schaefer of Lomira and Eugene (Mary) Schaefer of Fond du Lac; two sisters, Geraldine (Joe) Feucht of Las Vegas, Nevada and Kathy (Curtis) Rauch of Le Roy; two brothers-in-law, Harold Backhaus of West Bend and James Zautner of St. Michaels, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Ann; his brothers and sister, Earl, Myrtle, Gerald, and Stewart Schaefer; his brother-in-law, Gerald (Shirley) Backhaus; his sisters-in-law, Joanne (nee Backhaus) Zautner, Frieda Backhaus and Corrine Schaefer, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Charles were at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum. Father Adrian Staehler, OFM Cap. officiated and cremation followed the service.
Relatives and friends called at the funeral home on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until the time of services.
