Clarence J. Steger, 88, a resident of Fond du Lac Lutheran Home, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 30, 2015.
He was born in Theresa on August 3, 1926, the son of the late Lawrence and Loretta Steger. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving from 1944 to 1946. He married Betty Lau on November 28, 1964 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Theresa.
Clarence worked at Theresa Brewery for 3A½ years; at Kearney & Trecker in Milwaukee as a machinist for 25 years; and at Miller Tool & Die for 13 years. He also owned and operated Clarence and Betty's Tavern in Theresa for 10 years.
Clarence was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mayville and he was a long-time member of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a member of the Theresa American Legion Post #270 for 70 years, serving twice as Commander, and 68 years on the firing squad.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, especially sturgeon spearing, having speared 18 in his lifetime. He also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
Clarence is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Betty; two step-children, D. Michael "Ching" (Jean) Lau of Theresa, and Connie (Dave) Kusek of Fond du Lac; three grandchildren, Beth Kusek, Mary Kusek and Michael Lau; three sisters-in-law, Anita Steger, Lucille Steger and Annamae (Frank) Marrese; a brother-in-law, Tom (Shirley) Leichtle; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-daughter, Pattee Lau; a granddaughter, Leah Lau; a sister, Betty (Carl) Bandle; two brothers, Merle Steger and Lawrence Steger, Jr.; a sister-in-law, Marie (Les) Beck; and a brother-in-law, Paul (Millie) Leichtle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, June 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Theresa. Rev. Thomas Biersack will officiate and burial with military honors will follow in St. Theresa Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
