Daniel A. Salter, age 81, of West Bend, passed away on Sunday morning, April 6th, 2014 surrounded by loving family and hospice care.
Dan was born on a dairy farm near Eden on August 18th 1932 to the late Arthur and Irene (nee Stettbacher) Salter. He attended Fond du Lac Senior High School and graduated in the class of 1950. Following high school Dan attended the Farm Short Course at the University of Wisconsin. On August 10, 1952 Dan was united in marriage to Shirley Stecker at Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church in Fond du Lac.
Dan eventually took over the family farm which he continued to work in addition to other various careers including the Soo Line, Tecumseh, and the Gehl Company. In December of 1991, Dan retired from the Gehl Company after 31 years of service. His retirement years were spent going to many auctions and estate sales. He also enjoyed repurposing old farm machinery into furniture pieces. Dan will forever be remembered for his kindness and generosity towards friends and neighbors, and for his devoted love for his family.
Dan is survived by his loving wife, Shirley of West Bend; his four sons, Tom (Donna) of Marshall, VA, Terry of Hawaii, Tim (Alison) of Silverado, CA, and Ted (Sue) of West Bend; two granddaughters, Kaitlin and Kimberly Salter; six step-grandchildren, Cassandra Osborne, Nicholas Osborne, Michael Harrison, Eleana (fiancée Andrew Fanaika) Harrison, Christa (Bryan) Meathe, and Colleen Harrison. Dan is further survived by his half-brother, Stephen (Beth) Salter of West Columbia, SC; his step-mother, Dorothy Salter of Fond du Lac; two sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Salter of Fond du Lac and Alice Stecker of Nebo, NC; six nieces and nephews; and many other close relatives and dear friends.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Irene; his infant son, Daniel Salter Jr.; and his brother Neal Salter.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 6:00 pm at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church (1044 Silverbrook Dr. West Bend, WI 53095). Rev. Darrin Wiebe will officiate and inurnment of Dan’s cremated remains will be in Rienzi Cemetery in Fond du Lac. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from 3:00 pm until the time of service at 6:00 pm.
