Dennis O. Petermann, 61, of the town of Auburn, passed away on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family, after a long fight with multiple myeloma.
He was born on April 16, 1949, in West Bend, the son of Lloyd and LaVerne (Ramthun) Petermann, and on August 15, 1980, he was united in marriage to Barbara Simon Moore at St. John Lutheran Church in New Fane.
Dennis served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1974. He was aboard the destroyer the U.S.S. Frank E. Evans until half of the destroyer sank in the South China Sea on June 3, 1969. On board, 74 of 278 sailors lost their lives.
Dennis was a retired building
inspector for the Village of Jackson and up until the time of his death, the building inspector for the townships of Auburn, Ashford, Eden and Osceola. Dennis was also a DNR Hunter Safety instructor.
Dennis was a member of the Southeastern Wisconsin Building Inspectors Association, the National Wild Turkey Federation Gateway Gobblers Division, the New Fane Sportsman’s Club, St. John Lutheran Church in New Fane, where he served as a church elder and was a member of many trap shooting leagues. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trap shooting, receiving second place in trap shooting in the state.
During his illness, Dennis fought hard to remain with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Barbara; his two daughters, Stacey and Kimberly Petermann both of the town of Auburn; his granddaughter, Emma (the reason he fought so hard); his mother, LaVerne Petermann of the town of Auburn; his sister, Donna Landvatter of Fillmore; his mother-in-law, Myrtle Kuehl of Milwaukee; four sisters-in-law, Sandra (Ted) Lauren of Arkansas, Pat (Dennis) Kocher of West Bend, Cheryl (Dan) Kerlin of Kewaskum and Vicki (Kevin) Muzich of Wind Lake; a brother-in-law, Larry (Pam) Simon of Beechwood; his nieces and nephews, Jeff (Renee) Landvatter, Jason (Sandy) Landvatter, Lisa (Chad) Muckerheide, Jessi Kerlin, Jodi Kerlin, John (Bev) Foyse, Mark (Sheila) Foyse, Cheryl (Ben) Bauer, Brad Meyer, 14 great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Dennis was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd; his brother-in-law, Larry Landvatter; his father-in-law, Lawrence Simon and his grandparents, Henry and Esther Petermann.
Funeral services for Dennis were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at St. John Lutheran Church, N665 Highway S, Kewaskum (New Fane). Rev. Mark Eckert officiated and burial, with military graveside rites performed by members of the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum, followed in the church cemetery.
Relatives and friends called at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
Dennis’ family extends their heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Parameswaran Hari and the Froedtert Cancer Center for the compassionate care provided to Dennis and to his family.
