Doris E. Freehauf, nee Mattke, 83, of Rockford, IL, formerly of West Bend and Kewaskum, passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2009 at St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL.
She was born on May 31, 1925 in Milwaukee to the late Otto and Viola (nee Volkmann) Mattke. On October 19,1946 she was united in marriage to Carl T. Freehauf at Siloah Lutheran Church in Milwaukee. He preceded her in death on February 7, 1998.
Doris was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in West Bend and a former member of Peace United Church of Christ in Kewaskum where she served on the church council and taught Sunday school. Doris was a member of the Evening Circle. She was a sewing leader for the girls' 4-H as well as a Cub Scout Den Mother and a volunteer at Cedar Lake Home. Doris also lived in Minocqua where she was a member of the Guild and Methodist Church of the Pines. For the past year, Doris lived in Rockford, IL at Independence Village. She enjoyed many of the village activities and was the resident "pool shark." Doris enjoyed a happy and healthy life up until the time of her death.
She is survived by her son, Carl (Jane) Freehauf of Machesney Park, IL; a son-in-law, Joel Zautner of West Bend; four grandchildren, Ross (Kyle) Zautner of West Bend, Broc (Bridget) Zautner of Cedarburg, Rebecca Freehauf of Roscoe, IL, and Emily (special friend Jake Smith) Freehauf of Madison; four great-grandchildren, Zoey, Lauralei, Madeline, and Laura; two brothers-in-law, Fritz Freehauf of Jackson and Donald Freehauf of West Bend; a nephew, Mark (Shawna) Mattke of Oregon; other relatives and friends.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; a daughter, Laura Lee Zautner; a brother, Walter (Dorothy) Mattke; two sisters-in-law, Eunice Freehauf and Dorothy Freehauf; and a brother-in-law William (Mary) Lehmann.
A funeral service in remembrance of Doris will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 12:00 p.m. at the Myrhum - Patten Funeral Home, 1315 W. Washington St., West Bend. Rev. Rich Vincent of Immanuel United Church of Christ will officiate and entombment will follow in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorials to a charity of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
