Dorothy F. Muckerheide

February 3, 1925 — February 25, 2010

Dorothy Frances Muckerheide (nee Doll, formerly Dorothy Zwieg), 85, after many struggles through her life with illnesses was welcomed into the loving arms of the Lord on February 25, 2010, at Kathy Hospice in the town of Polk.


Dorothy was born to Herman and Anna Doll (nee Engeleiter) on February 3, 1925, in St. Lawrence. She was the second oldest of nine children and grew up with her family in St. Lawrence, where she attended public school. She moved to Hartford at age 18 and spent most of her adult life there. She also lived in West Bend, Random Lake and Kewaskum.


Dorothy was united in marriage to Grenfall “Granny” George Max Zwieg on September 28, 1946, at the St. Lawrence Church Rectory. They had four children together, David, Russell, Nancy and Allen, before Grenfall passed away on May 10, 1971.


Dorothy worked a variety of jobs in the Hartford area, including a number of years at the old Weyenberg Shoe Manufacturing Company, Hartford Hospital, Gateway Nursing Home, Elroy’s Dairy Bar and the Hartford VFW Hall. For many years, residents throughout the community enjoyed Dorothy’s home cooking.


Dorothy married Albert Muckerheide of Random Lake in 1988. They lived together in Random Lake until Al’s death in 1993.


In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, cooking for family and friends, listening to polka music, bowling, crossword puzzles and other brain teasers, watching the rodeo, sewing and altering clothes, and friendly conversation with family and friends.


She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her sons, David (Donna) Zwieg, Russell (Gayle) Zwieg and Allen Zwieg of West Bend and her daughter, Nancy (James) Backhaus of Kewaskum; her grandchildren, Melissa (Scott) Wolff of West Bend, Scott (Amy) Zwieg of West Bend, Natalie (Jason) Sherry of Waukesha, Erik Backhaus of West Bend, Kyle (Rachel) Zwieg of West Bend, Daniel Backhaus of Milwaukee, and Alexa, Grant and Julia Zwieg of West Bend; her great-grandchildren, Bryanna and Haylee Wolff, Tyler and Dylan Zwieg, and Gwen Backhaus; her brothers and sisters, Armella (Wayne) Dolgner of Arkdale, LeRoy (Veronica) Doll of Hartford, Leander (Carole) Doll of Germantown, Maryann (Gerald) Schaefer of Brownsville, Virginia (Stan) Griesmer of Slinger and Theresa (Joe) Melzer of northern Wisconsin; her sisters-in-law, Betty Doll of West Bend and Julia Doll of Natchitoches, Louisiana, many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.


She was preceded in death by both of her husbands, Grenfall Zwieg and Albert Muckerheide; her parents, Herman and Anna Doll; two brothers, Herman Jr. and Eugene, other relatives and friends.


A Mass of Christian Burial for Dorothy was held at St. Kilian Catholic Church, 428 Forest Street in Hartford on Monday, March 1, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Father David LaPlante officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at 1:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the Lutheran Social Services Adult Day Care Center of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, The Kathy Hospice and the Wisconsin Heart Hospital.



Dorothy’s family would like to thank Dr. Jeffrey Smale, Dr. Gary Preisler and the nursing staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Kathy Hospice for their devoted and compassionate care during her illness. Special thanks to the staff and Dorothy’s friends at Lutheran Social Services Adult Day Care Center in West Bend for providing her a safe and friendly home away from home and to her dear friends Tom and Sue, her bingo buddies and good luck charms.
