Erwin N. Schaefer

Erwin N. Schaefer, 88, of Lomira, passed away at his home on Saturday, August 11, 2012, surrounded by his family.


He was born on May 21, 1924, in Milwaukee, the son of the late Leo and Ann (Kuechler) Schaefer, and on January 27, 1951, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Weiland at St. Kilian Catholic Church in St. Kilian.


Erwin proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member for over 50 years of the Bintzler-Waehler American Legion Post 347 Lomira. He owned and operated Schaefer Repair in Lomira for over 20 years, where his primary work was repairing farm equipment. He was also a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lomira, the Knights of Columbus 664 Fond du Lac and St. Joseph’s Society in Fond du Lac. Erwin will be deeply missed by his wife, his family and by all who knew him.


Those Erwin leaves behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 61 years, Sylvia; 11 children, Betty (Harlow) Stork of Slinger, Joseph (Mary) Schaefer of Brownsville, Katherine McCollum of Frisco, Texas, Dorothy (Jeffery) Badke of Ponder, Texas, Irene (Lavern) Schmitz of Menomonee Falls, Carol (Roger) Billington of Mayville, Ann (Bruce) West of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Ellen (Gregg) Kramer of Hellertown, Pennsylvania, Brian Schaefer of Forest Lake, Minnesota, Sue Bisek and Steve (Debbie) Schaefer both of Lomira; a brother, Eugene (Mary) Schaefer of Fond du Lac; two sisters, Catherine (Curtis) Rauch of Le Roy and Geraldine (Joe) Feucht of Las Vegas, Nevada; three sisters-in-law, Marlene Schaefer of Cedarburg, Mary Ann Schaefer of Waupun and Pauline (Emil) Ronning of Fond du Lac, 24 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


In addition to his parents, Erwin was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Rose Mary; two sons, Robert and Kenneth Schaefer; a son-in-law, Ronald “Bub” McCollum; four brothers, Gerald, Stewart, Earl and Charles Schaefer and a sister, Myrtle Schaefer.


A Mass of Christian Burial for Erwin was held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 16, 2012, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 699 Milwaukee Street in Lomira with Father Michael Petersen officiating. Entombment followed Mass in Calvary Cemetery in Fond du Lac, where military honor rites were performed by members of the Bintzler-Waehler American Legion Post 347 Lomira.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., where a prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation was also at church on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.


In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society or Agnesian Hospice Hope were appreciated.


The Kietzer-Miller Funeral Home in Lomira was entrusted with Erwin's arrangements.
