Ethel L. Thill

Ethel Louise Thill passed away in peace on Monday, March 9th, 2009, at The Woodlands Senior Living Home. She was 96 years old.


Ethel was born March 30, 1912, at Garnet, the daughter of the late John & Grace (Spooner) Baltz. She attended Garnet Grade School and graduated from Clinton High School in June, 1929. On January 11, 1930, she married Lawrence Thill at Waukegan, Illinois. They renewed their vows at St. Mary’s Church in Fond du Lac on May 21, 1931, and had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 1, 1980.


She and her husband lived in Fond du Lac until 1933 when they purchased a farm near Mayville. They sold the farm in 1948 and moved back to Fond du Lac. After returning to Fond du Lac, Ethel worked as a bookkeeper for Singer Sewing Center until 1955 then was a bridal consultant at Edith’s Bridal Shop until 1963. She and her husband then opened Millhome Bar at Kiel. They later ran Parkway Bar in Hilbert until 1966. Ethel returned to work at Edith’s Bridal from 1966 until 1975.


Ethel was a volunteer at the blood bank in Lomira for many years. She received a plaque for 20 years of services as a volunteer driver for Dodge County. She also was a volunteer for Hospice Hope of Fond du Lac for 5 years and a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lomira. Ethel enjoyed making afghans and crafts for family and friends. She especially loved playing cards.


Surviving her are her daughter, Jeannine (Marose) of Park Falls and her son, Del (Marge) Thill of Fond du Lac; 16 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren (including step great-grandchildren) and 20 great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.


Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence in 1982; her sister, LaVonne (Bonnie) Syms in 1987; her brother, Orville Baltz in 1992; her daughter, Ruth Ballerstein in 1999 and a great-grandson, Stephen Woelfel.


A Mass of Christian Burial for Ethel was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 699 Milwaukee Street in Lomira. Father Dennis Budka officiated and Ethel was laid to rest next to her husband following Mass in the parish cemetery.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
