Francis C. “Pat” Schoofs, age 82, a lifelong resident of Kewaskum, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2006 at Cedar Lake Health Care Center in the town of West Bend.
He was born on October 4, 1923 in the town of Kewaskum, the son of the late Joseph and Catherine (Becker) Schoofs, and on June 17, 1950, he was united in marriage to Bernice Kowanda at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg.
Francis was employed by the Department of Natural Resources for 33 years where he left a legacy of trails and forests in the Northern Kettle Moraine for generations to enjoy. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum, the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus Father Casper Rehrl Council 1964 West Bend and a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Francis had a great love of the outdoors, farming and gardening. He was a wonderful storyteller and enjoyed woodworking during his retirement years, especially making toys for his grandchildren. Francis will be deeply missed by his wife, his family and by all who knew him.
Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Bernice; four children, Joan (William) Thompson of Stevens Point, Gerald (Nancy) Schoofs of Waupaca, Marjorie (Michael) Buncak of LaCrosse and David (Trisha) Schoofs of West Bend; two brothers, Allen (Paula) Schoofs of Kewaskum and Ralph (Patricia) Schoofs of Hartford; four sisters, Catherine Vitrano of Milwaukee, Anna (Gregor) Nigh, Lucille Nigh and Dorothy (Francis) Volm all of Kewaskum; two sisters-in-law, Helen Schoofs and Mary (Robert) Rosenthal both of West Bend; a brother-in-law, Thomas Kowanda of Mountain Home, Arkansas; nine grandchildren, Nicole (Anthony) Walker, Dr. Christopher (Heather) Thompson, James Thompson, Matthew Schoofs, Katherine Schoofs, Michelle Buncak, Micah Buncak, Thomas Schoofs and Emily Schoofs; four great-grandchildren, Mary Thompson, Austin and Abigail Walker and Kyan Schoofs, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Francis was preceded in death by three brothers, Dick (Marjorie), Joseph (Charlotte) and Theodore Schoofs; a sister, Apollonia (Joseph) Retzer and two brothers-in-law, Anthony Vitrano and Nathan Nigh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 331 Main Street, Kewaskum, Wisconsin 53040, following a prayer service at 12:30 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum. Father Edwin Kornath will officiate and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home, where a Knights of Columbus prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m., and on Tuesday at the funeral home from 11:30 a.m. until the prayer service.
The family of Francis wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Cedar Lake Health Care Center Silverbrook and Cedar Community Hospice for all the loving care provided to Francis. The community became his extended family and friends.
