Gertrude M. Campbell, 97, of Kewaskum, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in the town of Polk.
She was born on February 3, 1914, in the town of Trenton, the oldest of four children, the daughter of the late Ben and Frances (Proschinger) Zeltinger, and on May 22, 1943, she was united in marriage to Miles Campbell at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg. Miles preceded Gertrude in death on September 19, 1994.
Gertrude graduated from Holy Trinity Parochial School in Newburg. She was employed at Amity Leather Products in West Bend until her marriage. Gertrude worked on the family farm with Miles where they raised two children. Gertrude later worked at Zehren’s A & W Root Beer drive-in in Kewaskum and was also employed at Rosenheimer’s Department Store in Kewaskum for many years as a check-out clerk until she retired.
Gertrude was the oldest member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum and a member of the Christian Mother’s Sodality, of which she was president for two terms. She was the leader of the “Mission Sewing” group at Holy Trinity Church for many years. In her retirement years, Gertrude cut and sewed quilt tops for St. Matthew’s Parish in Campbellsport, Mission Sewing Circle. Gertrude was also a member of the St. Lawrence Seminary Parents Guild. Gertrude was an avid quilter, enjoyed gardening and collecting commemorative stamps.
Those Gertrude leaves behind to cherish her memory include two children, Brother Jerome Campbell, OFM Cap. of the St. Lawrence Friary in Mt. Calvary and Janice (Russell) Oelhafen of Kewaskum; a sister, Marian Daubenmeyer of West Bend; three nieces, Kathleen (Steven) Walker-Schmidt of Scottsdale, Arizona, Mary (Robert) Neuman of Fond du Lac and Sharon (Dan) Pahl of Horicon; three nephews, Bernard (Jeanne) Mrazik of Deerfield, Jerold Campbell of Kewaskum and Dennis Campbell of Tomah, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, Gertrude was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Zeltinger; a sister, Dorothy (Gilbert) Mrazik; a sister-in-law, Isabelle (Albert) Karius and three brothers-in-law, Cyrus (Lauretta) Campbell, James Beggan and Dale Daubenmeyer.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude was held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 331 Main Street in Kewaskum. Father Edwin Kornath, Father Elroy Pesch, OFM Cap. and Fr. Werner Wolf, OFM Cap. concelebrated and burial was at 9:00 a.m. on Monday in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends called on Sunday at the church from 2:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.
Memorials to St. Lawrence Seminary, Holy Trinity Catholic School or the charity of one’s choice are appreciated.
The Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum was entrusted with Gertrude’s arrangements.
Gertrude’s family extends their heartfelt appreciation to her neighbors and friends who assisted Gertrude over the years, to Dr. Preisler and the staff at Froedtert Health Clinic in Kewaskum, and the third floor nursing staff at Froedtert Health St. Joseph’s Hospital for the compassionate care provided to Gertrude.
