Gretchen G. Smith, age 81, of Kewaskum, formerly of Forreston, Illinois, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at Cedar Lake Health Care Center in the town of West Bend.
She was born at home on October 5, 1924 in Forreston, Illinois, the daughter of the late Robert and Greta (FitzGerald) Huntley. Gretchen was a 1942 graduate of Forreston High School and a 1946 graduate of Northern Illinois State Teacher’s College.
On November 20, 1949, she was united in marriage to Robert S. Smith at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston. Her husband preceded her in death on November 25, 1984.
Gretchen was an elementary teacher for 30 years, retiring in 1990 after teaching in Pekin, Forreston and Ottawa, Illinois. While in Forreston, she was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church and a Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Freeport, Illinois.
Gretchen moved to Kewaskum in 1990 and was an active member of Peace United Church of Christ in Kewaskum and Women at Peace. She was very generous with her time and talents and will be deeply missed by her family and by all who knew her.
Survivors include two children, Gary William (Denise) Smith of Oak Park, Illinois and Gayle (Stephen) Van Ess of Kewaskum; a brother, James G. Huntley of Sycamore, Illinois; five grandchildren, Gretchen, Katherine and Stuart Van Ess, Samuel and Mathew Smith, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister-in-law, Iris Huntley.
A memorial service for Gretchen was held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 8, 2006 at Peace United Church of Christ, 343 First Street, Kewaskum with Rev. Eric Kirkegaard officiating.
Inurnment was at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday in Chapel Hill Memorial Park in Freeport, Illinois with a time of fellowship following at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston.
The family received visitors on Tuesday at the church from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services.
