Harland Paul Nonhof, of Surprise, Arizona, died September 13, 2011.

He was born on January 26, 1929, in Cedar Grove, to Harry and Anna (nee Dees) Nonhof. On June 14, 1952, Harland was united in marriage to Marlys Herber in Sheboygan.

He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army for 2-1/2 years. After his military service he attended Lakeland College and Vandercook College of Music, graduating with a Masters Degree in music education. Harland worked for the Sheboygan City Bus Lines and was known as the "Singing Bus Driver." For over 27 years He was an instrumental music teacher in New London, Greenwood and Campbellsport. Harland also directed several church choirs, the Clark County Mens' Choir and Sheboygan Municipal Band. In 1989, after he retired from teaching music in Campbellsport, the family moved to West Bend and in 2003, they moved to Arizona. Harland enjoyed all activities dealing with music, sang solos and sang with many church choirs.

He served on St. John's Lutheran Church Board of Elders and Music Committee. He was an adjudicator of bands, ensembles and soloists. Harland sang with the Swingin' Seniors of Washington County and was an Emeritus member of the Wisconsin Bandmasters Association. Harland and his sister, Anita, are both listed on the Wall of Music, at Fountain Park, in Sheboygan. He enjoyed participating in small and large Bible-study groups, riding his Honda Helix motorcycle and especially loved being with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marlys Nonhof of Surprise, AZ; his children, Terri (Robert) Witte of Union Grove, Michael (Laurel) Nonhof of Surprise, AZ, and Diana Portlance of West Bend; grandchildren, Brian Witte of Union Grove, Kristen (Ron) Beesley of Burlington, Branden (Rachel) Witte of Union Grove, Kaitlin Portlance of West Bend, Julie Nonhof of Surprise, AZ, Ashley Nonhof of Surprise AZ, Bryanah Nonhof of Surprise, AZ, and Alexander Nonhof ; great-grandchildren, Ronnie Beesley, III of Burlington and Ella Skylar of Union Grove; other relatives and friends.

Harland is preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Carter Witte; sisters, Anita Nonhof and Elizabeth (Peter) Joosse; and brother, Bernard (Martha) Nonhof.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 16th at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 809 S. 6th Avenue, West Bend. Visitation will be at the church from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. A meal and more visiting will follow the service.

A second memorial service will be held on October 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at Crown of Life Lutheran Church, 13131 Spanish Gardens, in Sun City West, AZ, with a visitation from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service. A meal and more visiting will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, family prefers memorials to American Cancer Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society and/or the Music Department of either of the churches.
