Harold "Hal" Hoberg

September 19, 1920 — August 13, 2014

Harold "Hal" Hoberg, Jr., 93, of West Bend, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital, West Bend.

He was born on September 19, 1920 in Milwaukee to the late Harold and Grace (nee Nelson) Hoberg, Sr. He graduated from Rufus King High School in Milwaukee and then served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during WWII in the South Pacific and Japan. After returning from the Army, Hal attended forestry school in Rhinelander and worked at the Rhinelander Paper Mill.

While in Rhinelander, Hal met Norma Gydesen and they were married on August 13, 1949. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to the Milwaukee area and then to Cedarburg where they lived for 46 years. In 1999 they moved to Cedar Community in West Bend.

Hal worked at Continental Can in Milwaukee which later became Crown Cork and Seal. At the age of 55, he retired from Crown Cork and Seal then worked for the City of Cedarburg for 10 years.

Hal was an excellent wood carver and enjoyed relief carving in the Norwegian rosemal style. He also loved sports and played competitive tennis and table tennis into his 70s.

He is survived by his wife, Norma; two sons, David (Debra) Hoberg of Shiocton and James Hoberg of Cedarburg; two grandchildren, Matthew Hoberg and Jodi Hoberg; two nieces, Jane (Al) Giesecke and Darlene (John) Chiloyan; two nephews, Rob (Lori) Paul and Bruce (Debra) Paul; other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Grace Hoberg; his step-mother, Grace Hoberg; and a sister, Dorothy (Darrell) Paul.

A memorial service in remembrance of Hal will be held on Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 4860 Arthur Rd., Slinger, with Rev. Matthew Short officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Luke Church Building Fund are appreciated.
