Harold T. Mehring, 95, of Dundee (Long Lake), formerly of West Bend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, November 5, 2007, at SynergyHealth St. Joseph’s Hospital in the town of Polk.
He was born on September 5, 1912, in Port Washington, the son of the late Gustave and Emilia (Klietz) Mehring. On June 19, 1935, he was united in marriage to Margaret Miller at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum. Margaret preceded him in death on August 17, 1992. On September 19, 1997, he was united in marriage to Dorothy (Bohn) Schaefer at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend.
Harold started in the fish business in 1930, selling from farm to farm in Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties. He opened Mehring’s Fishery in downtown West Bend in 1949 and was the first in the state to offer carryout fried fish in 1952. He retired to Long Lake in 1977 after 47 years in the wholesale and retail fish business.
Harold was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church in Eden, the Knights of Columbus Father Casper Rehrl Council 1964 West Bend, Moose Lodge West Bend 1398, Wisconsin Fisheries Council and Long Lake Fishing Club.
Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy; five children, Richard (Jean), Gerald (Nancy), Thomas (Kaye) and James (Beverly) Mehring and Emilie (special friend, Scott Harrison) Fudurich; two stepsons, Richard (Jan) and Robert (Nan) Schaefer and a stepdaughter, Suda (the late Dennis) Schaffer; two sisters-in-law, Laura Miller and Pearl Miller. He was the cherished Papa to 15 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
In addition to his first wife of 57 years, Margaret and his parents, Harold was preceded in death by three brothers, Arthur, Walter and Alfred and two sisters, Florence Smith and Helen Nierode (his twin).
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2007, at Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church, W1562 County Road B, Eden. Father Joseph Juknialis and Father Charles Wester concelebrated and burial followed in Holy Angels Catholic Church Cemetery in West Bend.
Relatives and friends called on Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., where a Knights of Columbus prayer service was held at 7:30 p.m. Relatives and friends also called at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers, Harold’s wish was that memorials be sent to Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church.
