Hazel M. O'Meara, nee Scovel, age 89, of Winneconne passed away on October 27, 2012 at Evergreen Retirement Community in Oshkosh.
She was born on February 1, 1923 in Butte Des Morts, WI to the late Harold and Alice (nee Shipley) Scovel. Hazel attended Butte Des Morts elementary school and Oshkosh High School. She earned her degree in Elementary Education from UW-Oshkosh. On July 22, 1944, she was united in marriage to Roger O'Meara at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Oshkosh. Roger preceded her in death on December 27, 1982.
Hazel started her career in Boltonville in teaching. She later taught in the West Bend school district at Silver Maple and Jackson, where she retired. After her retirement, she taught at Ye Olde School on Cedar Lake for 13 years and enjoyed traveling all over the world.
Hazel was an avid reader; she was a member of the branch book review, Rehash and Reactions, Delta Kappa Gamma, Washington County Retired Teachers and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). In 2006, Hazel was named the Named Gift Honoree by the West Branch of AAUW. Hazel was a former Girl Scout leader and volunteer at the West Bend Blood Center.
She is survived by her sister, Gail (Bruce) Bohner of Winneconne; brother, Gary (Helen) Scovel of Minnequa; brother-in-law, William O'Meara of West Bend; seven nieces and nephews, Don (Margaret) Bjork, Laura Lynn (John) BonneCarrere, Barbara (Vincent) Fornias, Cynthia Bjork-Douglas, Jason Scovel, Steven (Laura) Zeinert, and Cheryl (Randy) Marx; many great-nieces and nephews; special friends, Sue Mueller, Carol Lupton, Lynn Duwell, Tracy Dornacker, and Chris Koppsell; many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roger; her sister, Laura Jean (Paul) Bjork; and sister-in-law, Ruth O'Meara.
A Mass of Christian burial in remembrance of Hazel will be held on Wednesday, October 31st at 11:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 4868 State Road 175, with Rev. Joseph Dominic presiding. Burial in Holy Angels Cemetery will follow. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the mass.
