Henry W. “Sam” Hayes, 90, of the town of Byron, passed away on Friday, August 22, 2014 at Kathy Hospice in the town of Polk.
He was born on April 23, 1924, in Fond du Lac county, the son of the late Andrew and Anna (Lepien) Hayes, and on November 30, 1947, he was united in marriage to Irene Schrank in Waterford.
Sam was a life-long farmer in the town of Byron and was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lomira. He loved to sing and was involved in many vocal groups throughout the years. Sam received multiple awards in land and water conservation as well as ‘Tree Farmer of the Year’ and ‘Wisconsin Master Agriculturist’. He had a passion to teach and hosted many international agriculture students and inner city children at his farm. Students from around the area came to his farm yearly for an “Outdoor Classroom”.
Those Sam leaves behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 66 years, Irene; two sons, Paul (Patty) Hayes and Steven (Wendy) Hayes both of the town of Byron; eight grandchildren, Tyra (Donald) Poyner, Elizabeth (Ross) Fiersten, Rebecca (Austin) Batalden, Benjamin (Jamie) Posthuma, Jason (Lorraine) Posthuma, Todd (Emily) Hayes, Tristan (Sherri) Hayes and Teagan Hayes (fiance, Brace Hayden); six great-grandchildren, Henry, Eddie and Oliver Hayes, Andreas, Victoria and Jackson Posthuma; a brother, Robert (Elizabeth) Hayes of Fond du Lac, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynne Hayes; two sisters, Juen and Marjorie Hayes and a brother, James Hayes.
A memorial service for Sam was held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, September 8, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lomira. Rev. Kerry Wilson officiated and burial of Sam's cremains was in Ebenezer Cemetery in the town of Lomira.
The Hayes family greeted relatives and friends at the church on Monday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services.
The Kietzer-Miller Funeral Home in Lomira was entrusted with Sam's arrangements.
