Hortensia W. Lau

Hortensia W. “Tannie” Lau, 92, of Fond du Lac, formerly of Lomira, passed away on Sunday, July 12, 2009, at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac.


She was born on May 25, 1917, in the town of Lomira, the daughter of the late Harvey and Louisa (Schwartz) Weigand and on October 14, 1939, she was united in marriage to Ruben G. Lau at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in the town of Lomira. Her husband preceded her in death on January 10, 1992.


Tannie was a longtime member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lomira, was a member of the Ladies Aid and the WLA Auxiliary. Tannie will fondly be remembered as an accomplished seamstress, who sewed for family and friends, including wedding dresses for her daughters, and as a gifted artist. She will be deeply missed by her family and by all who knew her.


Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie (Robert) Retzlaff of Fond du Lac, Marcene Rooney of San Diego, California and Rae Nell (Raymond) Halbur of Fond du Lac; a foster son, Ivan (Mary) Schuster of Fond du Lac; six grandchildren, Natalie (Greg) Kurczewski, Shana (Scott) Beyersdorf, Dori (Steve) Lichty, Joseta Halbur, Ted Halbur and Nicholas Schuster, six step-great-grandchildren, four step-great-great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.


In addition to her husband and parents, Tannie was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jack Rooney.


Funeral services for Tannie were held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 550 Water Street in Lomira. Rev. Dan Schmidt officiated and burial followed in the church cemetery.


Relatives and friends called on Tuesday at the church from 3:00 p.m. until the time of services.
