Howard P. Mayer, 91, of West Bend, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at Cedar Lake Health Care Center in the town of West Bend.
He was born on August 9, 1917, in West Bend, the son of the late Phillip and Anna (Stahnke) Mayer, and on December 30, 1944, he was united in marriage to Elaine Schleif. His wife preceded him in death on March 15, 2004.
Howard was a West Bend High School graduate and served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Kewaskum.
Howard will fondly be remembered for his love of music and history. He enjoyed playing the accordion, singing in the church choir, singing at various activities at Cedar Lake and participating in German Fest in West Bend. He spent many hours documenting family history and enjoyed studying history.
Survivors include his son, Thomas (Gloria) Mayer of Huntington Beach, California; two grandchildren, Kimberly (Michael) Miller of St. Paul, Minnesota and Jeffrey Mayer of Ithaca, New York; two great-grandchildren, Audrey Grace and Elliot Morris Miller; a niece, Patricia Mayer, five nephews, Kerry Mayer, Michael Mayer, Frederick Klein, Philip Klein and William Klein, Jr., other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Howard were held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2008, at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum with Rev. William Wiederanders and Chaplain David Stone officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites by the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum, was at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday in Peace United Church of Christ Cemetery in Kewaskum.
Relatives and friends called on Friday at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services.
