James E. Schmitt

James E. Schmitt, 76, of Bettendorf, Iowa, formerly of Lomira, died Tuesday, August 4, 2009.


He was born July 13, 1933, in St. Kilian, the son of the late Joseph and Josephine (Strobel) Schmitt, and on June 19, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marian E. Weninger at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lomira. She preceded him in death on December 15, 2000.


James was a graduate of St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary and was the founder and president of Construction Partners Inc. in Rock Island, Ill. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bettendorf, Iowa and was the former president of the Village of Lomira and a member of the Village Board. James was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.


Survivors include three daughters, Jane (Mike) Bishop of Kohler, Julie (Jim) Bintzler of Round Hill, VA, and Joan Schmitt of South Lake Tahoe, CA; four grandchildren, Michelle (Ben) Peters, Nicole Bishop, Craig Bishop and Matthew (Kristina) Bintzler; a great grandson, Jacob Peters; a sister, Mary (Terry) Urban of Campbellsport; his loving companion, Sara Owen of Bettendorf, Iowa, other relatives and friends.


In addition to his wife and parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Vincent Schmitt. May they rest in peace.


The family greeted friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2009, in the Gathering Space at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bettendorf, where a Christian Wake Service was offered at 6:00 p.m.


A Mass of Christian Burial for James was celebrated at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 699 Milwaukee Street in Lomira. Father Dennis Budka officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
