James “Jim” N. Opelt, 85, of West Bend passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
He was born on April 28, 1938, to the late Norman and Mary Ann (nee Grzanna) Opelt in Madison, WI. Jim graduated from Madison Central High School in 1956. On December 27, 1960, he was united in marriage to Susan Goodrich. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1962 and his master’s degree in 1968 from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville. He was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in West Bend. Jim loved being a teacher for over thirty years, receiving the Herb Kohl Teacher Fellowship Award for excellence in teaching in 1990. He spent much of his time doing home projects and remodeling, including creating many of the pieces of furniture in their home. Jim enjoyed traveling with the family, going on cruises, and riding his Harley. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Jim will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Those Jim leaves behind to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 63 years, Susan Opelt; three children, Deborah Clark, Laura (Gregory) Giessen, and Kurtis (Jennifer) Opelt; six grandchildren, James Clark, Stephen Clark, Samuel (Jamie) Giessen, Rebecca (Marcus) Williams, Jillian Opelt, and Liam Opelt; a brother, Ronald (Jan) Opelt; an uncle, Floyd Opelt; two sisters-in-law, Nancy (Jim) Cook and Ruth (Ron) Niendorf; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son-in-law, Donald Clark.
VISITATION: Jim’s family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, February 3, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:45 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 148 S. 8th Ave., West Bend.
SERVICE: A memorial service will follow the visitation at the church at 4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jim’s name to St. James Episcopal Church are appreciated by the family.
