Joanne M. Guay

Joanne M. Guay, 75, of Lomira, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2009, at Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.


She was born on January 27, 1934, in Fort Atkinson, the daughter of the late Rev. Dempster and Mildred (Holtz) Wandschneider. On October 27, 1956, she was united in marriage to Allyn Guay at Fifth Avenue Methodist Church in West Bend, with her father presiding.


Joanne was an elementary school teacher and later a Chapter 1 teacher. She taught for many years in the Lomira School District, retiring in 1996, and was a member of the Wisconsin Education Association. Joanne was a very active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lomira, where she established the church nursery and taught young adult classes.


The construction of the new Lomira library was a project very dear to Joanne and she spent many hours assisting in the planning of the new library. She was a longtime member of the Lomira Library Board, where she served as president for many years, and she organized the community Book Club.


Over the years Joanne was involved in her community as a Boy Scout leader, a Brownie leader, was a local PTA founder, volunteered at the Red Cross Blood Bank and the Food Pantry and started the Adopt a Highway in the area.


Some of her favorite pastimes included playing bridge, stamp collecting and traveling, including most of the United States, Canada, tours of Europe, New Zealand and Mexico.


Joanne touched the lives of many people. She will be deeply missed by her husband, her family and by all who knew her.


Survivors include her loving husband of 52 years, Allyn; two sons, Rob (Linda) Guay of Cary, Illinois and Tom (Calli) Guay of Cedarburg; five grandchildren, Kristin, Jon, Griffin, Casey and Sullivan Guay; a brother, Dr. John (Julie) Wandschneider of Menomonee Falls; a sister-in-law, Barbara Wandschneider of Dallas, Texas, other relatives and many friends.


In addition to her parents, Joanne was preceded in death by a brother, James Wandschneider.


Funeral services for Joanne were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 300 Church Street in Lomira. Rev. John Hobbins officiated and burial followed in Salem Cemetery in Lomira.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Tuesday, May 5 from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. and on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
