John W. Spartz

John W. Spartz, 68, of Waupun, formerly of West Bend, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 2, 2006 at Waupun Memorial Hospital in Waupun.


He was born on December 31, 1937, in Saukville the son of the late Wilfred and Evelyn (Grotelueschen) Spartz, and during his early life, the family moved to West Bend, where John attended Holy Angels Catholic Grade School. Later his family moved to a farm in the St. Michaels area and John attended Kewaskum High School graduating in 1955.


Following graduation, John enlisted in the U. S. Air Force, where he served for four years refueling planes and was a member of Strategic Air Command. He was deployed out of Texas and spent service time in Alaska and England.


On August 27, 1960, John was united in marriage to Joan O’Brien. The couple made their home in the West Bend area and raised three children.


John was employed as a machinist by Weasler Engineering before joining the West Bend Police Department in 1968. While on the force, he obtained the rank of sergeant and was midnight supervisor, chief’s aide and head of the detective bureau. After 21 years of service, John took early retirement due to injuries received in the line of duty.


John and Joan lived in Wausaukee for 13 years and enjoyed the north woods. John enjoyed hunting, fishing and liked watching the eagles and wildlife on the river. In June 2006, John and Joan moved to the Waupun area to be closer to their children and grandchildren. John will be deeply missed by his wife, his family and by all who knew him.


John was a member of the American Legion Post in Wausaukee and Waupun.


Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Joan; three children, John (Wendy) Spartz of West Bend, Jackie (Ken) Krueger of International Falls, Minnesota and Janine (David) Martin of Kewaskum; eight grandchildren, Aly, Erin and Andrew Spartz, Nikki and Matt Krueger, Jennifer, Greg and James Martin; two brothers, Tom (Janet) Spartz of Kewaskum and Robert (Rosie) Spartz of West Bend; a sister, Betty (John) Arndt of West Bend; a brother-in-law, Clancy (Pam) O’Brien of Simpsonville, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Peggy (Joel) Jacque of Black Creek, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his parents-in-law; a sister, Evie Schmidt and a sister-in-law, Jean Pagel.


A Mass of Christian Burial for John was held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Holy Angels Catholic Church,138 N. 8th Avenue, West Bend with Father Rick Wendell officiating. Burial, with military graveside rites, was at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday in St. John of God Catholic Cemetery in the town of Farmington.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. until the time of services.
