Lyra M. Battistine

Lyra M. Battistine, 77, of Brownsville, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 20, 2011, at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac.


She was born on March 20, 1933 in the town of LeRoy, the daughter of the late Joseph and Esther (Scheberl) Gassner, and on January 28, 1956, she was united in marriage to Nazarius “Reno” Battistine at St. Andrew Catholic Church in LeRoy. Lyra and Reno were lifelong residents of Brownsville. Reno preceded Lyra in death on May 19, 2005.


Lyra was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in LeRoy.


Those Lyra leaves behind to cherish her memory include two daughters, Karen (Steve) Erickson of Menomonee Falls and Lori (Bob) Beck of Brownsville; two granddaughters, Kimberly and Melissa Zilavy and a step-granddaughter, Alexis Erickson; a sister, Mary Ann Hamberger of Fond du Lac; a sister-in-law, Delores Gassner of Clintonville, a special nephew, Terry Battistine; a dear family friend, Tom Zilavy, other relatives, friends and her grandkitties, Budder, Boo-C, Schatze, Bubba, Rocky and AJ.


In addition to her husband and parents, Lyra was preceded in death by a brother, Ermin; three sisters, Bernice (Paul) Baierl, Beatrice (Willard) Krueger and Gertrude (Aaron) Retzlaff; a brother-in-law, Arthur Hamberger and a nephew, Bruce Hamberger; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Bernice Battistine.

During Lyra's last years a special bond was formed with her granddaughter, Kimmy, who truly enriched her life in ways that will never be forgotten.


A Mass of Christian Burial for Lyra was held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, W3081 County Highway Y in LeRoy. Father Tom Biersack officiated and burial followed in the parish cemetery.


Relatives and friends called on Wednesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.


Memorials to Hospice Hope are appreciated.


The Kietzer-Miller Funeral Home in Lomira was entrusted with Lyra’s arrangements.

Special thanks to Lyra’s nieces, Kay McClanathan and Sandra Tremore, for the care and companionship they provided over the past year, and to Hospice Nurse, Ilene for her care and compassion she provided to Lyra and family members during her final hours.
