Margaret "Gretchen" Windorf (nee Habenicht) age 89, of West Bend, was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Harvest Home in West Bend.
Margaret was born on May 14, 1923 to the late Ernst and Louise (nee Teppi) Habenicht in Sterkrade, Germany. She came to the United States in 1929 and received her naturalization on June 7th of that same year. She married Joseph Mandl on October 10, 1942. Together they had a son Dennis on May 13, 1945. Joe died in a plane crash on July 1, 1945 in Long Beach, CA. Margaret married William Windorf on March 8, 1947 at Zoar United Church of Christ in Germantown. He lovingly raised her son as his own and together they had a daughter Carol. William preceded her in death on August 2, 2003.
Margaret was very proud of her family, and her great-grandchildren were the delight of her life. She will always be known for her Vienna torte and chocolate eclairs. She enjoyed keeping her flower gardens weed-free. Margaret and Bill loved hosting parties for family and friends. Often times this included playing Sheepshead which she continued to enjoy when her "card club" would come to visit at Harvest Home. Margaret was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in West Bend.
Margaret is survived by her two children, Dennis (Susan) Windorf of Liberty, MO and Carol (Joel) Hausmann of West Bend; four grandchildren, Scott (Jill) Windorf of Edmond, OK, Steven (Shonta) Windorf of Goose Creek, SC, Jennifer (Lance) Roell of West Bend, and Ryan (Dana) Hausmann of Germantown; seven great-grandchildren, Zachary Windorf, Sydney Windorf, Evan, Mason, and Cullen Roell, and Vander and Vosten Hausmann; loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by an infant son; her siblings, Ernst, Louis (Johanna), John (Mary), Gertrude (Theo) Ulrich, Anna (William) Lucka, Rosa (John) Glick, Matilda (Roman) Schulteis, and Frank; her husband's siblings, Lehman, Hilda (William) Becker, Adela (Ed) Geidel, Olive (Walter) Christ, and Ella (Harold) Smith.
Funeral services in remembrance of Margaret will be held on Tuesday, December 11th at 4:30 p.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 809 S. 6th Ave., West Bend. Rev. Gerald Presuhn will officiate. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 2:30 p.m. until the time of service. Burial will be Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in Washington County Memorial Park.
Memorials to St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church would be greatly appreciated by the family.
The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to each member of the staff at Harvest Home Assisted Living who treated our mother like she was their own parent. They would also like to thank the staff of Grace Hospice for their comforting care.
