Mary Ellen Mccarty

August 18, 1934 — November 18, 2024

Mary Ellen McCarty passed away peacefully at her home on Big Cedar Lake on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 90 years old.

Born August 18, 1934, in Milwaukee to the late James and Josephine (nee Murphy) McCarty, Mary Ellen graduated from Holy Angels High School, then Mt. Mary College with a degree in Education, and then received a master’s degree in education from the University of Arizona.

As a Milwaukee Public School teacher, Mary Ellen taught Kindergarten for over 30 years at Humboldt Park School. She often spoke of how much she loved working with the children and their families. Towards the end of her teaching career, Mary Ellen became a Mentor Teacher through Alverno College where she was an Assistant Professor.

Mary Ellen said: “I tried to be a good Catholic and say the rosary everyday”.  She was devout in her beliefs and took action to be a good Catholic. She gave her time and was very generous in supporting the Catholic ideals she believed in. She volunteered at Shade Tree, Family Promise, and she was a long-time dishwasher at St. Ben’s meal program. Very proud of her Irish heritage, she also volunteered at the Irish Cultural Center.

Spending her summers at Big Cedar Lake was the highlight of her year. She loved swimming, boating and Sunday family dinners. She later realized her dream and built a beautiful home on her parents’ property. Although she was not fortunate enough to have children of her own, Mary Ellen played an important part in the growth and development of her nine nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. Her family credits her with being a vital force in keeping everyone close. She never missed a birthday or holiday.

Those left to cherish Mary Ellen’s memory include her sister Joanne (nee McCarty) McCarthy and her five children: Mary McCarthy, Meg McCarthy, Anne (Tim) Murphy, Jean (John) Rogers, and Ellen McCarthy; nephews, James (Judy) McCarty and William McCarty; and nieces, Mary Kuntz and Kathleen (Peter Bell) McCarty. Also, many cousins and great nieces and nephews survive her.

In addition to her parents, Mary Ellen is preceded in death by her beloved brothers, James McCarty and William (Janet) McCarty.
