Maurice E. C. Ehrhardt, 97, of the town of Lomira, passed away at Hope Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lomira, on August 19, 2009.
He was born on a farm near Knowles on May 8, 1912, the son of the late Daniel and Rose Sterman Ehrhardt. He graduated from Mayville High School in 1929, and on May 31, 1934, he married Lavila Jesse in Lomira. Born to Maurice and Lavila were Evelyn, Carol, Lois, Robert, Ronald and Lynette. Lavila preceded Maurice in death on December 28, 1957. Maurice married LaVerne Wolf on February 2, 1959, in Lomira. They observed 50 years of marriage this year.
Maurice was a dairy farmer for about 50 years. During that time he also produced maple syrup. Later in life he operated a sawmill. In addition to custom sawing, he sawed and planed the lumber for a house he built for LaVerne and himself. Maurice and LaVerne wintered in Mesa, Arizona for 22 years.
Maurice was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lomira and its preceding congregations, serving in many capacities. He was a Farm Bureau member, member of Wisconsin and Arizona State Poetry Societies, and Green Fox and Rock River Radio Clubs.
Maurice could most accurately be described as a renaissance man. He had a life-long interest in music. He was a published poet and short story writer. His memoirs, I Am Still Here, was published at age 90 in 2002. Maurice enjoyed flying airplanes in his young adult years, and loved to fish. He was an amateur radio operator, and occupied much of his time on the computer in later years.
Survivors are his wife, LaVerne; four daughters, Evelyn Krug of Lomira, Carol Dallman and husband, Mark of Blacksburg, Virginia, Lois Hartwig and Cal Ohme of Lincoln City, Oregon, Lynette Sherman and husband, George of Amarillo, Texas; a son, Robert and wife, Janet of Tempe, Arizona; 13 grandchildren, Steven Krug, Lorilyn Krug, Karen Chiodini, Kris Lane, Kurt Dallman, Robert Hartwig, Rochelle Blanco, Timothy Ehrhardt, Ericka Ehrhardt, Elisa Priolo, Nathan Sherman, Nikah Hart, and Nisha Sherman; 14 great grandchildren; one great-great grandson; two sisters-in-law, Irene Ehrhardt of Fond du Lac and Doreen Unferth and husband, Don of Lomira; a brother-in-law, Oliver Wolf of Lomira; 18 nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his first wife, Lavila and his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; two brothers; four sisters; two sons-in-law, Arlen Hartwig and Donald Krug; and a great-grandson, Riley Peter Arnold.
A Memorial Service for Maurice was held on Saturday, August 22, 2009, at 4:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 300 Church Street in Lomira with Rev. John Hobbins officiating.
Visitation was at the church on Saturday from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m.
Cremation took place and burial of his cremains followed the service in Emanuel Cemetery in the town of Lomira.
