Neil Glenn Slick

August 31, 1933 — August 8, 2023

Neil Glenn Slick, age 89, of West Bend, passed to the eternal glories of heaven on Tuesday morning, August 8, 2023, at Compassionate Heights in West Bend, WI. His life was well lived.

Neil was born August 31, 1933 in Superior, WI to Rex James, Sr. and Olive May (nee Brittan) Slick.

Neil graduated from Wisconsin State College, Superior with a Bachelor of Science degree. He continued his higher education by getting his Master's Degree in Physics at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA.

On April 23, 1960, Neil married Elizabeth (Betty) Broehm Schermerhorn. With that marriage he immediately became the proud father of the four Schermerhorn children. (Their father passed away a few years earlier) In the following years, they added two more Slick children to the mix.

Neil spent years teaching math, science and physics at Colby, Winneconne, Lourdes and Ripon High schools. While teaching at Ripon, he took a group of students to Ripon College (on Saturdays) for a computer class. The students developed such an interest in computers, the following year computers were installed at Ripon High School for student usage.

Neil was an avid photographer and did some wedding photography also. He had his own dark room at the high school and later at his home. While teaching, he was an advisor for the yearbook and photography clubs. He also shared his love of astronomy with his students.

Every summer he worked extra part time jobs. This allowed the six children to participate in sports, camps, music and dance lessons. Neil and Betty were willing chauffeurs and chaperones for many of the children's activities. Many summer days were spent on Green Lake (with the family boat) water skiing and swimming. Neil was nicknamed the “Absent Minded Professor” and this was true when he remembered the plug (for the boat) wasn’t in, when the boat was already in the water.

After many years of teaching, he changed careers. He worked as a programmer/analyst for Independent Computer Services. He continued this career at Wisconsin Gas (WE Energies) until his retirement.

Once retired, Neil and Betty spent years traveling the United States with Betty’s sister and brother-in-law. Other trips included Austria, Ireland, Canada, Jamaica and Mexico.

Neil loved his family, physics, photography, history and antique cars. He could build or fix anything and taught his children these life skills.  In his “free time” he was working on cars or other projects.

Neil was always a proud husband, father, uncle, and grandfather. Neil and Betty traveled to many family activities and events over the years. He also tutored many family members in math and physics.

Preceding Neil in death were both his parents, brother Rex (Jim) Slick, sisters Betsy Slick Olsen, Nelda Slick St. George, Nora Slick Parenteau.

He is survived by his wife Betty Slick, children, Connie Schermerhorn Gross, Anne (Woody) Schermerhorn Richardson, Mari Schermerhorn Miller, Thomas (Christine) Schermerhorn, David (Julie) Slick, Beth (Kevin) Slick Sablay. There are 21 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
