Reuben W. Harter

Reuben W. Harter, 88, died peacefully at his home in Beechwood on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, surrounded by his family.


He was born on October 2, 1923, in the town of Scott, the son of the late Charles and Ida (Hintz) Harter, and on April 26, 1947, he was united in marriage to Alice Fredrich at Peace Lutheran Church in Hartford.


Reuben served his country during World War II in the U. S. Air Force. He farmed on the family homestead until retiring in 1978.


He was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in the town of Scott where over the years he served as an elder, usher, Sunday school superintendent and on numerous other committees. Reuben was a member of the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum, and was an active member of the Beechwood Fire Department and later became a department honorary member. Reuben also served terms as a town of Scott supervisor.


He will fondly be remembered as one who enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, golfing, traveling, playing cards, gardening, reading and spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, his family and by all who knew him.


Those Reuben leaves behind to cherish his memory include his wife of nearly 65 years, Alice; two sons, Gale (Mary Jane) Harter of Random Lake and Steven Harter of Adell; three granddaughters, Stephanie (Matthew) Huff of Milwaukee, Rachel (Dan) Mayer of Adell and Rebecca (Adam) Schneider of Sacramento, California; four great-grandchildren, Maya and Keagan Schneider, Stella Huff and Brynn Mayer, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


In addition to his parents, Reuben was preceded in death by two brothers and their wives, Alton (Florence) Harter and Marlin (Evangeline “Vannie”) Harter; a sister and her husband, Laverne (Fredrick “Fritz”) Kleinke; two brothers-in-law and their wives Clarence (Helen) Fredrich and Gordon (Ruth) Fredrich; two nephews Ronald Harter and Kenneth Harter.


Funeral services for Reuben were held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in the town of Scott with Rev. Kurt Ziemann officiating. Burial, with military honor rites performed by members of the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum, followed in the church cemetery.


Relatives and friends called at the church on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of services.


Memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church were appreciated.


The Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum was entrusted with Reuben's arrangements.
