Rev. Terry A. Berg, age 65, of West Bend, died on Sunday, November 14, 2010 with his loving family at his side at St. Joseph's Hospital in the town of Polk.
Terry was born on May 18, 1945 in St. Paul, MN to the late Alton and Verna (nee Pearson) Berg. He met the love of his life Karen Chadwick while attending Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute in Teaneck, NJ. On August 20, 1966, they were united in marriage in Bloomington, IN.
That fall Terry and Karen moved to St. Peter, MN where Terry attended Gustavus Adolphus College earning his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology in 1968. Following his graduation Terry attended Northwestern Seminary in St. Paul MN for one year before moving to Chicago, IL where he earned his Master of Divinity at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. On June 4, 1972 Terry was ordained into the Lutheran Church in America. Terry served many congregations over the years including First Lutheran Church in Dollar Bay, MI; Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingston, NY; Fox Point Lutheran Church in Fox Point; and Trinity Lutheran Church in West Bend. He also served in significant ministries at Habitat for Humanity, Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Menomonee Falls, and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Watertown. Due to illness, he retired in January of 2007, but courageously continued his ministry in many other ways.
During his retirement, Terry enjoyed traveling and relaxing on his pontoon boat on Big Cedar Lake. He was an avid sports fan who had a great sense of humor and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Karen; his three sons, Rev. John Berg and his wife Rev. Sarah Stumme of Northbrook, IL, Rev. David Berg and his wife Robyn Ohashi of Rochester, MN, and Stephen Berg and Chi Obiorah of Dallas, TX; and his four granddaughters, Sydney, Lydia, Miya, and Annika. He is further survived by his brother Brian (Sandra) Berg; his two sisters-in-law, Joanne Chadwick and Margrethe O'Connor; his brother-in-law, Peter (Charry) Chadwick; and many other close relatives and dear friends.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law, Herbert and Karen Chadwick; and his brother-in-law, Edward O'Connor.
Funeral services in honor of Pastor Terry will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at 11:00 am at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church (1025 S. 7th Ave West Bend) with Pastor Matthew Short of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Slinger officiating. Visitation will be at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home in West Bend on Wednesday, November 17 from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of services.
