Ruth A. (Krueger) Mertz

Ruth Arlene Mertz (nee Krueger), age 94, went to be with Jesus in Heaven on Friday, March 3, 2023, believing she was saved by the Grace of God through Faith in the Perfect work of Redemption done by Jesus on the Cross.

Ruth was born February 1, 1929 in Shawano, Wisconsin to the late Dewey and Lydia Krueger.  She grew up on a farm with her parents and two brothers in the Bonduel area. Her growing up years were filled with hard work, helping to run the family farm and taking care of her Grandmother, all without the modern conveniences we enjoy today.

In 1952, while working at the Bilmay Hotel in Shawano she met Ervin Mertz, who was working as a mason on the nearby Menominee Indian Reservation.  They were married on May 22, 1954 at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano.  They then moved to West Bend, where they lived for the next 66 years, building a Christian home together for their three sons.  They were charter members of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, helping to start the church in 1954, and were active there until old age made it difficult to attend.

Ruth was a dedicated wife, mother, homemaker, and church member.    Her adult life was focused on taking care of the family’s needs, and her elderly Mother’s needs for many years.  Dinner was on the table every night at 5 pm, and was followed by family devotions.  She was active in her church, teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir with her sons, and participating in Altar Guild and Ladies Aid.

She is survived by her three sons, Lester (Laura), Dan (Dawn), Robert (Jane); five grandchildren, Paul, Erik (Xin), John, Jenna, and Grace; a sister-in-law Vida Stueber; and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin (in 2020), parents, and brothers Roy (Margie) and Harry (Mary).

Ruth was residing at Cedar Bay Nursing and Rehab at the time of her death.

A funeral service in remembrance of Ruth will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 462 Meadowbrook Dr., West Bend with a meal to follow. Burial will be at 2:45 p.m. at Washington County Memorial Park.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:45 a.m.

Memorials to Pilgrim Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Hour in Ruth’s name are appreciated by the family.
