Steven Peter Schmidt age 68 of Scottsdale, Arizona, left the struggles of this world to be with his God on Thursday, November 14, 2013.
Steve was born on April 18, 1945, in West Bend to the late Peter and Marcella (Schladweiler) Schmidt. He grew up in the West Bend area, attending Immaculate Conception grade school and graduating from West Bend High School with the class of 1963. He attended Marquette University and graduated with a Three Year Certificate in Healthcare Management.
Steve was extremely proud to serve his country during the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer in 1967 and 1968. He had a hunger to learn about all American Wars and the plight of all branches of the military from the Revolutionary War to current day conflicts.
Steve’s employment took him across the country to the extent that he worked in nearly every state during the past thirty years in Healthcare Management. His latest employment was with Iasis Healthcare in Phoenix, AZ serving as Director of Facility Services for three of their four hospitals. Unfortunately health issues forced him to leave St. Luke’s in June of 2013.
Steve loved people and the interaction he had with people. His calmness and quick wit always put others at ease. He strived for perfection in his professional, personal and spiritual life and could rarely say no to anyone’s request. Steve was a devoted husband and family man, kind and caring to everyone he met. Nothing meant more to him than his family. Steve was a devout Catholic and a very spiritual man. His loving concern for people is the reason he enjoyed working in healthcare.
On December 18, 2006, Steve was united in marriage to the love of his life, Kathleen (Campbell) Walker of Grafton in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Steve and Kathy lived in Scottsdale from 2010 until the time of his death. Steve dreamed of retiring in Arizona’s warm climate. He was an avid sports enthusiast, especially for the Green Bay Packers and Nascar Racing. Steve loved history, enjoyed reading books, magazines and the daily paper. He loved watching old Western movies. Steve was always interested in current events. Vintage cars were a passion with Steve. He was fluid in German and enjoyed speaking German to family and friends. Steve’s legacy is that he was an honest and strong man yet sensitive, possessing integrity and character. He was not a materialistic man. Time spent with family, friends and good food are what mattered to Steve.
Those Steve leaves behind to preserve his memory and carry on his legacy include his wife, Kathy; his son, Mark of Peyton, Colorado and his daughter, Niki (Ken) Wood of Middleton and their mother Mary Lou Beihoff of Madison; his siblings, Leon (Joan) Schmidt of Kewaskum, Sharon (Jim) Filo of West Bend and Dave (Rae) Schmidt of Kewaskum; three grandchildren, Sarah Wood, Charles Wood and Jadyn Schmidt; two aunts, Estelle (nee Schladweiler) Matenaer of Kewaskum and Ione (nee Schladweiler) Kohlman of West Bend, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Mass to celebrate Steve's life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 8, 2013, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 331 Main Street in Kewaskum. Father Edwin Kornath will officiate and burial with military honors will be at noon on Monday in the parish cemetery.
The Schmidt family will receive relatives and friends at the church on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.
Memorials in Steve’s name may be directed to Knights of Columbus Father Casper Rehrl Council 1964 West Bend, Wounded Warriors, or the charity of your choice.
