Verna K. Schmid, (nee Johnson), age 80, of West Bend, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at Cedar Community Hospice.
She was born on December 11, 1926 in West Bend to the late Aaron and Edna (nee Schacht) Johnson. Verna was raised in West Bend and graduated from West Bend High School in the class of 1944. On June 21, 1946 Verna was united in marriage to Arthur C. Schmid in Puckaway, Wisconsin. They moved to Chicago for several years until returning to West Bend in 1949. In 1959 Verna and Art started Midcities Tool & Die in Barton. Verna served as the Secretary - Treasurer.
She had been a longtime member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, life member and past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star West Bend Chapter # 73, past president of the Barton School PTA, and past president of the West Bend Community Memorial Library which she served for 24 years. Verna also served as secretary for many years on the board of the Embassy Condominium Association, where she lived before moving to Cedar Community in 2001. Verna and Art enjoyed many winters at their home in Cape Coral, Florida.
Verna is survived by four sons, Kelly C. (Mary) Schmid, Arthur A. (Debra) Schmid, Kevin S. (Terri) Schmid, and Kurtis K. (Henrietta) Schmid, all of West Bend; eight grandchildren, Russell Rappel-Schmid of California, Kelly A. Schmid of West Bend, Christopher (Heather) Schmid of Holmen, Kayla (FiancAC.e Kevin Lang) Schmid of Oak Creek, Karmen Schmid of West Bend, Nicole Schmid of West Bend, David Schmid of West Bend, and Brian (FiancAC. Nicole Schmidt) Schmid of Hartford; four step-grandchildren, Jason Swift, Melissa Parker, Sara Parker, and Marshall Parker, all of West Bend; a great-grandson, Jared Schmid of California; two sisters, Diane (Paul Oliver) Johnson of West Bend, and Audrey (Jack Shannebarger) Hamann of California; a brother Charles (Rose) Johnson of West Bend; a sister-in-law, Pat Smith of Prairie du Chien; other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Art, in 2000, and her grandson, Sam Schmid, in 2005.
Eastern Star services for Verna will be held on Friday May 11th at 7:00 pm at the Myrhum ~ Patten Funeral Home, West Bend, with Funeral services to immediately follow. Rev. Sharon Stier will officiate. Visitation will be held at the Funeral Home on Friday from 3:00 pm until the time of services. Burial will be in Washington County Memorial Park on Saturday at 10:00 am.
