Vernon Arthur Schacht, age 85, of West Bend passed away peacefully on August 7, 2014 in West Bend.
He was born on July 24, 1929 at Orchard Grove in the Town of Farmington to Earl and Erna (nee Roll) Schacht.
A life-long resident of Washington County, Vernon worked as a tool & die maker at the West Bend Company, retiring after 45 years of service. He proudly served his country in the US Army 45th infantry, 179th Regiment, Co. B, 4th platoon - heavy weapons unit and saw active duty in the Korean War. Vernon retired from the Army as a Sergeant 1st Class on October 7, 1952. Upon his return from the war, Vernon was united in marriage to Marion Jung on April 11, 1953 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in West Bend.
Vernon was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, West Bend Company 25 year club, Fred A. Schaefer VFW Post # 1393, lifetime member of the National Plott Hound Association, and the NRA. He was a former member of both the West Bend-Barton Sportsman Club, and the Beechwood Sportsman Club. Vernon was an excellent trap shooter well into his later years.
When not working, Vernon enjoyed shooting trap and hunting. He also took great pride in tending a large family vegetable garden and generously shared the harvest with friends and family.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marion; four children, Brian (Mary Ann) Schacht, Vivian Moller, Yvonne (Dan) Immel, and Darren Schacht (Larry Engel); grandchildren, Tara Schacht, Brian Immel, and Elizabeth (Tim) Philipp; a great-grandson, Anthony Schacht-Chase; two sisters, Bernice Bindrich, and Shirley (Armand) Becker; twin brothers Lyle (Marlene) Schacht, and Lloyd (Ruby) Schacht; brother-in-law, Gerald (Lois) Jung; other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather Harold Schacht; brother-in-law, Robert Bindrich; nephew, Daniel Becker; and his dear grand-daughter, Katherine "Katie" Immel. Vernon and Katie shared the same birthday and began their new life in Heaven the same day, exactly five years apart.
Funeral services in remembrance of Vernon will be held on Saturday, August 16th at 1:00 pm at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church (809 S. 6th Ave.) West Bend Rev. David Kellerman will officiate and burial with military honors will follow in Washington County Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service.
Memorials to St. John's Church organ fund, or the Alzheimer's Association are appreciated by the family. The family would like to thank Dr. Kircher and Seasons Hospice for their loving care of Vernon in his final hours.
