Virgil H. Hackbarth, 78, of St. Michaels, passed away on Thursday, January 7, 2010, at the Samaritan Health Center in West Bend.
He was born on February 9, 1931, in Beaver Dam, the son of the late Herbert and Clara (Thom) Hackbarth, and on July 15, 1977, he was united in marriage to Mary Reuter Braun at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Michaels. Mary preceded Virgil in death on December 6, 1996.
Virgil proudly served his country in the U. S. Army National Guard during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Michaels, and was employed by the Washington County Highway Department, retiring in 1989 after many years of service.
Virgil will fondly be remembered as an avid hunter and as a grandpa who enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Those Virgil leaves behind to cherish his memory include two daughters, Connie (Edwin) Kleman of West Bend and Kathy Kranz of Allenton; three stepsons, Mike Braun of West Bend, Daniel Braun and Patrick (Kelley) Braun both of Kewaskum; six stepdaughters, Kathleen Peters of Kewaskum, Carolyn (Kevin) Darmody of Jackson, Marian (Chuck) Clark and Patricia Nelson both of West Bend, Susan (Kenneth) Doll of Hatley and Judith (Daniel) Bingen of Belgrade, Montana; a step-daughter-in-law, Sandy (Wade) Myers of West Bend; two grandchildren, Stephanie (Joshua) Roth and Christopher (Marnie) Kleman; 24 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Elijah, Elizabeth and Anna Roth; 23 step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, his twin sister, Virginia Fredrick of Wisconsin Rapids, Margaret (Harland) Fredrick of Hartford and Bette (Carl) Will of Hustisford; a sister-in-law, Loretta Hackbarth of Hartford, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to his wife and parents, Virgil was preceded in death by six brothers, Wilmer, Melvin, Harold, Ronny, Floyd and Lloyd Hackbarth; a great-grandson, Ethan Roth; a stepson, Bill Braun; a step-son-in-law, Kenneth Peters and a step-great-grandson, Michael Doll.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Virgil was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2010, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Michaels. Father Elroy Pesch O.F.M. Cap and Deacon Ralph Horner officiated, and military honor rites performed by members of the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum followed Mass. Burial was on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the parish cemetery.
Relatives and friends called on Monday at the church from 4:00 p.m. until the time of Mass.
