Virginia A. Oppermann

August 3, 1924 — March 5, 2007

Virginia A. “Ginny” Oppermann, 82, of Kewaskum, passed away on Monday, March 5, 2007, at Cedar Lake Health Care Center in the town of West Bend.


She was born on August 3, 1924 in the town of Scott, the daughter of the late Arthur and Martha (Hintz) Staege, and on October 2, 1943, she was united in marriage to Armin Oppermann at Immanuel Lutheran Church in the town of Scott. Ginny was a loving wife for 32 years to Armin, who served as the Kewaskum Fire Department chief for many years. Her husband preceded her in death on April 19, 1975.


Ginny was an honor graduate of Kewaskum High School. She was employed at Kettle Moraine Bakery and later worked at Rosenheimer’s Department Store in Kewaskum as a store clerk. Her interests included sewing, gardening, cooking and eating. Ginny loved fishing in her backyard, catching northern pike, bullheads and blue gills. Her motto was catch, clean and eat. She had a genuine interest in politics and often wrote to her local, state and national representatives on important issues. Ginny was an avid reader and faithfully wrote letters to her grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Ginny was a loyal teacher’s aide volunteering at Holy Trinity Catholic School and she was a member of St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kewaskum.


Survivors include two children, David (Bonnie) Oppermann of West Bend and Debbie (Joe) Backhaus of the town of Auburn; six grandchildren, Michelle and Brian Backhaus, Greg (Tammy) Oppermann, Brad (Kelly) Oppermann, Kristin (Andy) Ziegler and Ross (Wendy) Oppermann; eight great-grandchildren, Mckenzie Retzlaff, Alexa, Ava and Armin “A.J.” Oppermann, Thomas and Will Oppermann, Audrey and Hailey Ziegler; a sister, Vivian Vetter of Kewaskum, other relatives and friends.


In addition to her husband and parents, Ginny was preceded in death by a sister, Veila (Ruben) Vetter, a brother, Vernon (Inez) Staege and a brother-in-law, Leland Vetter.


Funeral services for Ginny were held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2007 at St. Lucas Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1417 Parkview Drive, Kewaskum. Rev. Timothy Henning officiated and cremation followed.


Relatives and friends called on Monday at the church from 3:00 until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Lucas Lutheran Elementary School or the charity of one’s choice are appreciated.


The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Cedar Lake Health Care Center and to Ivy Manor in Campbellsport for the kind and compassionate care they gave to Ginny.
