Wayland D. Tessar, 83, of Kewaskum, passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2008, at Cedar Lake Health Care Center in the town of West Bend.
He was born on December 30, 1924, in West Bend, the son of the late John and Lorinda (Schaefer) Tessar, and on November 7, 1946, he was united in marriage to Adeline Zacho at Trinity Lutheran Church in Dundee. Adeline preceded him in death on July 3, 1978. On July 26, 1980, he was united in marriage to Darlene Horn at Peace United Church of Christ in Kewaskum.
Wayland proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was an active member of the Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum for over 62 years and was often a participant in the military honor guard for fallen comrades.
Wayland had a passion for playing high school baseball and basketball, an involvement he continued after graduation. He was inducted into the Land O’ Lakes Hall of Fame in 1988. Wayland was a WIAA basketball official for 25 years and refereed with his brother, John.
Wayland began his banking career in 1949 and his duties included posting, teller and bookkeeping. He was promoted to Assistant Cashier in 1954, Cashier in 1960, Vice President/Cashier in 1966, was elected to the Board of Directors in 1967, Executive Vice President/Cashier in 1969, President in 1972 and became Chief Executive Officer/Chairman of the Board in 1985. Wayland retired from the Valley Bank of Kewaskum in 1986 after 37 years of service.
He was very involved in his community as director of the Kewaskum Kiwanis, the Kiwanis Foundation, Cedar Lake Home Foundation, UW-Washington County Foundation and the Valley Bank of Fredonia. Wayland served on the Kewaskum Village Board for 14 years, eight as Village President in the 1980’s and was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Kewaskum. He will be deeply missed by his wife, his family and by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene; a son, Jay (Christine) Tessar of Mayville; a step-granddaughter, Jessica White; a daughter-in-law, Candi Tessar of Nevada; a brother, John (Mary) Tessar of Kewaskum; a sister-in-law, Donna Tessar of Kewaskum, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
In addition to his first wife, Adeline, and his parents, Wayland was preceded in death by a son, Daniel and two brothers, Allen (Annabelle) and Thomas Tessar.
Funeral services for Wayland were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Peace United Church of Christ,343 First Street in Kewaskum. Rev. Eric Kirkegaard officiated and burial, with military graveside rites by Robert G. Romaine American Legion Post 384 Kewaskum, followed in the church cemetery.
Relatives and friends called on Friday at the Miller Funeral Home in Kewaskum from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services.
